Big Lots will reopen 132 stores across 14 states in May.

Big Lots continues its store comeback under its new owners.

The discounter will reopen 132 stores across 14 states in May, with the first wave on May 1 and a second on May 15. North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania lead the list with the most reopenings. (Locations listed at end of article.)

The openings, which come under the direction of new owners Variety Wholesales, build on the positive customer response to the initial reopenings of Big Lots stores in April, the company said.

The stores are reopening in a variety of markets ranging from major metropolitan areas to smaller towns and are being merchandised with treasure hunt items, closeouts and “unbeatable bargains,” the company noted.

“The customer response to the newly expanded assortment of fresh inventory and great deals has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Lisa Seigies, president and CEO of Variety Wholesalers. “The Big Lots stores opening in May show our continued commitment to providing the best value to our customers with apparel for the family, everyday needs for the home, kitchen, and pantry plus a huge selection of famous brands.”

Variety operates more than 400 stores across 18 states. In addition to Big Lots, its retail banners  include Big Lots, Roses Discount Stores, Roses Express and Maxway.

Earlier this year, Big Lots closed a previously announced sale agreement with Gordon Brothers Retail Partners. As part of the deal, Variety was set to acquire about 200 Big Lots stores. The agreement came as the bankrupt chain was holding store closing sales at its approximate 950 locations nationwide.
