Walmart debuts 'store of the future' in Texas; to open seven new stores
Walmart’s newest supercenter features numerous leading-edge design elements.
The discounter has opened a supercenter location in Cypress, Texas, which is both its first ground-up supercenter in four years and the first new-construction "store of the future" in the U.S.
Walmart plans to build or convert more than 150 stores to its new superstore model over the next several years. In addition, in 2025 Walmart plans to open new supercenters in Frisco and Melissa, Texas; Eagle Mountain, Utah; and Eastvale, Calif. Neighborhood markets will debut in Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Milton, Fla.; and Pace, Fla., while stores in Mountain View, Calif.; and East Windsor, N.J., will be converted into full supercenters.
Designed to make shopping faster, easier and more connected, the Cypress supercenter features reimagined layouts, expanded services and in-store technology.
Highlights of the new store include:
- A full-service fuel station with eight pumps serving up to 16 vehicles.
- A modern pharmacy with a health service room and drive-thru.
- A refreshed vision center offering expanded services.
- Elevated departments in fashion, baby, home and pets.
- Regional and national features such as an Hispanic bakery section, fresh tortilla maker, sushi station, and Dunkin’.
- Customer amenities including a Mother’s Room and an Auto Care Center.
- Ability for customers to use the Walmart app to engage with the store, including scheduling TV mounting, enhancing registries or booking tire installation.
- Pickup and delivery options including curbside, fast delivery within three hours, express delivery as soon as 30 minute, and InHome.
- Store-wide digital shelf labels and updated Walmart branding.
- QR codes throughout the store that unlock digital tools, resources and instant access to an expanded assortment.
According to Walmart, this new "store of the future" opening is part of a broader multimillion dollar investment strategy intended to modernize retail, create jobs and enhance the shopping experience for customers across the U.S.

Walmart says the new supercenter will create hundreds of local jobs, showcase local Texas-based suppliers and serve as a community hub.
“This isn’t just a ribbon cutting. It’s a commitment to the future, an investment in a community and new job opportunities," said John Furner, president and CEO of Walmart U.S. "I’m proud of our associates in Cypress who brought this to reality. A new store means new opportunities. Not only for associates starting or continuing a career, but for small businesses and service partners that will grow alongside the store."
Headquartered in Berntonville, Ark., Walmart Inc. operates more than 10,750 stores and numerous e-commerce websites in 19 countries.
